Staying power in media

As in any field of endeavor, it is sometimes easy to grab power. But how to stay in power is a different ballgame altogether. Take for example media power. One false move and you are out in ignominy. There are those who think that for as long as you have the flair for literary savvy, the gift for glib of tongue and the baritone voice of a radio talent, then you've got what it takes to be a promising mediaman. But it is not always sugar n' spice and everything nice for one who struts around as a mediaman. More often than not, there are those who think that they are already a cut above the rest and therefore swagger around like a peacock. If a so-called mediaman behaves this way, then he must have thought that success goes into his head. Swell head, he is called.

We remember two media characters not too long ago who touted their youth as a hallmark of their capability to make things happen. Wearing the advantage of youth as a badge of honor as they discharged the functions of media, they strutted around town as if the world owed them a living. Since everything in this world is temporary, there was a time that they ruled the media roost in their own terms using the power of youth as their calling card.

It did not take long for these media humbugs to hang on for good. What happened along the way was that just when they thought that there was no stopping their impressive exploits, they were likened to those who fell into the trap called: yet so young, yet so corrupt. The big question is, where are they now? They are nowhere to be found after a checkered stint in the world of media.

There is also this media hack who packed a lot of promise as a writer. But the trouble begun when he cannot be trusted with money not belonging to his own. Since he started his media career in the wrong foot , he found it difficult to expand his media clout ( from print to radio) because his prospective media employers gave premium to his past records of petty thievery rather than his supposed inborn talents. He has since become a wandering Jew in the media business transferring from one outlet to another because he cannot control his itch for kleptocracy

Ahh, the so-called veterans? They are also colorful characters. Some of them are casting a moist eye in the coming elections, either as candidates or just plain media trumpeters. For the would-be candidates, our advice is that they should strive hard that the votes they generate during the balloting should be more than their age. But one thing is certain. The veterans may not be getting any younger but their names still ring a bell.
