TALIBON –IN efforts to better understand the marvelous Danajon double barrier reef, 40 participants from 10 towns sharing responsibility successfully completed the 7-days 3D-mapping workshop on Danajon. Its output: 21st 3D map built in, first in Central Visayas and the biggest in the country. The model now rests in the first Interpretive Center of Talibon, the first interpretive center in the Visayas Region. Sponsored by the Fisheries for Sustainable Harvest (FISH) project and the local government of Talibon headed by Mayor Juanario Item, the workshop banked on the participatory approach of communities in resource management. The participants came from 10 towns covered by the Danajon Bank as Tubigon, Clarin, Inabanga, Buenavista, Getafe , Talibon, Bien Unido, Trinidad , Ubay and President Carlos P. Garcia. The gab conducted July 3-9 at the Carlos P. Garcia Multipurpose Center was designed to produce a 3D model and relief map of the Danajon Bank. The model also hopes to put in people's knowledge of the important resource and train participants in the use and maintenance or updating of the 3D map as an IEC tool. The model would also be useful for planning and managing Danajon Bank's fisheries and coastal resources. Day-one started with the presentation of the speakers and its topics. Aning Gulayan, Fish project site manager gave the overview of the Danajon Bank while Becky Smith, CLIN-3 Manager/IEC Advisor presented the rationale and objectives of the workshops. Workshop 1 lasted for three days. The workshop-1 activities include assembling the blank model, organization of the work, assigning groups and facilitators, preparation of carton sheets, tracing contours, cutting out contours and pasting layers. Workshop II was on transposing the information and geo-referencing people's knowledge like orienting key informants and transferring mental maps. Workshop III was the transposing the information and geo referencing secondary information like placing the grid and finishing touches. The seminar ended by an explanation on how to use the 3D model map as a multi-purpose tool for resource use planning and management. The model would also be used for extracting information, digitizing manipulations, field verification and update the 3D model. Fish project empowered Bohol 's northern towns of Bohol sitting upon the 272 square kilometer unique double barrier reef making its communities responsible for protecting it against from the illegal fishers and rehabilitate its damaged parts. |
