Phil Science Hi-School accepts scholarships

PUPILS who have earlier shown an inclination towards a profession in science and mathematics may just have the chance to breeze through school through the Philippine Science High School (PSHS) scholarships for school year 2007-08. The offer is open to graduating elementary pupils by March 2007 and belonging to the upper 10% of the graduating class (based on grade five ranking) and have special aptitude in Science and Match

A grade five report card and letter of recommendation from the principal should be enough to support the claim. Furthermore, applicants must be non-immigration Filipino citizens; not more than 15 years old by June 2007. They must also be in good health and have not previously taken the PSHS National Competitive Examination, organizers said.

All qualified applicants are required to submit two fully accomplished application forms with four identical and recent 1x1 ID pictures; a non-refundable processing fee of Php 75.00 and two self-stamped long window envelopes. Interested applicants may secure application forms at the principal's office of their respective schools or at the DOST Provincial S &T Center at 118 J.A. Clarin cor. Enerio St. in Tagbilaran City (near barracks). Deadline of submission of applications to the DOST Bohol Provincial Office is on August 31.

Admission to the PSHS System entails passing the PSHS National Competitive Exam, which is two-step screening process. The first screening is scheduled on October 14, at CVSCAFT Tagbilaran City Campus and will consist of verbal, non-verbal and Mathematics test known as Scholastic Aptitude Test (Sat). Those who pass the first screening will qualify to take the Science and Math Aptitude Test (SMAT) in the second screening scheduled December 2006.

PSHS scholarship privileges include free tuition fees, free loan of books, monthly living allowance and group accident test known as Scholastic Aptitude test (SAT). The PSHS System annually offers scholarships to deserving students who are trained under the curriculum designed to prepare them for careers in science and technology. It is one of the service institutes of the DOST that geared towards contributing to the expansion and development of the country's scientific and technological manpower, Vina Antopina said.
