Appointment of new bishop winning piece in news quiz

Here's a news item which has the equivalent of “hitting two birds with one stone”.

The announcement of a new bishop during a mass officiated by Bishop Leopoldo Tumulak, apostolic administrator of the Diocese of Tagbilaran, Tuesday was the subject of a news writing contest on the occasion of the three-day 2006 City Division Schools Press Conference held at the Dr. Cecilio Putong National High School last week.

Picking on the subject regarding the coming of the new bishop, Ron Patrick Guingguing, bagged the top prize in English News writing. A son of barangay captain Sen and Pat Guingguing of Montana , Baclayon, he is a second year student of the Tagbilaran City Science High School . He will represent his school in the news writing contest during the Regional Schools Press Conference here in this city on Nov.27-29.

The Diocese of Tagbilaran awaits the arrival of The Most Reverend Leonardo Yuzon, Medroso, D.D., prelate of Borongan, Samar as the new bishop here. The date of his installation is yet to be announced. Bishop's Medroso's appointment as new bishop of Tagbilran is long in coming after the post was vacated by Bishop Tumulak two years ago. After being ordained on March 30, 1963 at Barugo Parish Church in Leyte , he started his ministry as parochial vicar in the same parish. For four years, he served as parochial vicar. Then he became the parish priest of Tolosa, Leyte in 1967. He also became the vice-rector and Prefect of his former school, the Sacred Heart Seminary.

Before his Episcopal Ordination on March 17,1987 at the Saints Peter and Paul Parish in Ormoc City , he served different positions at Palo, Leyte including the position of vicar general of the Archdiocese of Palo. This year, he will be celebrating his 43rd year in the service of his flock. He is also the current chairman of the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippine Episcopal Commission on Canon Law.
