Tagbilaran turns 40; Rites set on Monday

Tagbilaran City turned 40 yesterday but the rites are set tomorrow, July 3 because the actual date fell on a Saturday. Mayor Dan Lim will lead tomorrow's ceremonies slated at the Tagbilaran City Hall. The ceremony will kick off with a holy mass at 7 am with Rev. Fr. Crispin Varquez as celebrant.

During the program, free school uniforms including pairs of shoes and school supplies will be distributed as part of the city government public education program. Firefighting equipment which were acquired through the efforts of consultant Hans Schoof will also be distributed. During the program, awards will be distributed to distinguished honorees who have contributed in various ways to Tagbilaran and its progress.

The honorees are led by Lim Tieng Su (Cia Lim) as the most distinguished Tagbilaranon. The award will be given posthumously. He is joined by the “Pillars of the City” honorees composed of former City Mayors Venancio Inting (posthumous), Rolando Butalid, Jose Ma. Rocha and Jose Torralba for public service and Ong Guat of Bohol Quality fame for business. Patron of the city honorees include Schoof, sportsman Antonio Aldeguer, businessman Mario Uy and national artist Napoleon Abueva. The award of distinction meanwhile are given to lawyer Edilberto Gallares, trader Marlito Uy, Generals Carlos Holganza and Albert Olario and Superior General Antonio Pernia, SVD.

Meanwhile, the city will also honor the top 10 business taxpayers namely Alturas Supermarket Corporation, Bohol Quality Mall, Plaza Marcela, Coca-Cola Bottlers Philippines, Inc., Shopper's Mart, Jollibee (Alturas), Bohol Light Co. Inc., Mc Donald's, San Miguel Corporation and Jollibee/Greenwich (Marcela). Special citations will also be given to David's Salon, National Book Store and Agencia Exquisite of Bohol Inc.

The “Excellence in Sports” award will be given to boxers Ray “Boom-Boom” Bautista and Caesar Augustus Amonsot and chess prodigy Jedara Docena. Manila Mayor Lito Atienza, who donated school bags for Tagbilaran pupils aside from other contributions to the city, will receive the “Big Brother” award. Meanwhile, the Mother Vine Award will be given to the Garcia-Sarmiento family, the Policarpo Lim family and the Yap brothers who have made a name in business and the Tirol family for education. Lim will also deliver an inspirational message during the program.
