Long lost colleague back in town

Coming in like rain amidst the heat of summer, a long lost colleague is back in town after long years of toiling in the asphalt jungle of San Francisco , USA . Michael “Mitz” Descallar was a contemporary from way, way back in the old Varsitarian days of University of Bohol .

This Bglante and Mitz were both associate editors of the school organ and have fond memories with the school paper along with lawyer Alfredo Bentulan who was our editor then; the late Bonnie Libay; the late Bob Mejorada; Noli Aparece; Marie (am sorry I forgot his familiy name) Virgie Ibao and Roman Jabines.

Thus when news broke out that Mitz Descallar is in town, we lost no time to track his whereabouts in Maribojoc. It was through the help of Maribojoc native Boy Descallar that we were able to meet Mitz during the Maribojoc fiesta last May 5. From Mitz, we learn that his homecoming is more of a sentimental one. For the first time since he left Maribojoc 25 years ago, Mitz will become the spearhead of a school reunion among elementary grades graduates of Tinibgan Elem. School in 1958.

Like a conquering hero out to save a girl in distress, Mitz will play Santa Claus to his less fortunate classmatesduring the reunion today. To his classmates numbering 18 (out of the more than 30), the balikbayan will give one sack of rice each. He has also a special gift for classmates who remain in the barangay by earning their keeps through weaving, the main source of livelihood of the barrio since time immemorial. It might interest the people of Maribojoc that Mitz for all those who care to know, is not actually from Tinibgan.

A true blue Poblacion boy, he became an “adopted son “ of Tinibgan because his mother used to teach in the barangay. His mother is now in the States in the company of Mitz his wife the former Olympia Alagon and two children, all girls. If you hear that Tinibgan is a riot of sights and sounds today, don't be surprise. Mitz Descallar is home and he is spearheading a grand reunion, the magnitude of which was like no other.
