By: Bob Galero

GARCIA-HERNANDEZ, BOHOL –THIS mine-rich coastal municipality is also rich in swine population, says a 2003 Livestock Profile Data shared by livestock technician Pedro Madelozo. At 12,000 heads, the town's livestock asset could be pegged at P60 million.

Garcia-Hernandez owns 22,000 heads more or less of available livestock and poultry. These include carabao, cattle, swine, goats, horse, game fowl, duck, turkey and chicken. This as Carmen and Candijay occupy both Garcia Hernandez' flanks taking first and third place respectively in swine population. With this, Mayor Myrna Schreurs pressed on the 38 Barangay Livestock Aides or BALAs who completed the two-days basic and refresher training course last April 17-18, to help the town keep the record if not top it. She reiterated that the town's 30 barangays can be perfectly served by the BALAS after they have reacquired and refilled their ammunition with new knowledge from veterinarians.

The reorientation lecturers were Drs. Meydalyn Dagandan, Frederick Madriñan and Romeo Cano, Animal Health Division Chief of the Provincial Veterinarian's Office. Topics discussed during the training were features on ruminant, non-ruminant digestive system, avian digestive and respiratory system, animal nutrition, grasses and forage, parasite diseases/prevention and control on ruminants, swine and chicken, understanding vaccines, vaccination and immune response, commonly used antibiotics and withdrawal period. Second day training includes a practicurn wherein actual vaccination of chicken using NCD, castration of piglets, goats, anti-rabies vaccination and other related animal services were done.

Livestock technician Madelozo represented Adelaida Galendez, Municipal Agricultural Officer and Bert Tipon, BALA president of said town extended congratulations to the trainees. For her part, Provincial Veterinarian Dr. Stella Marie D. Lapiz had also expressed congratulations to the graduates.
