Fisherman dies when dynamite explodes

A fisherman suspected of engaging in dynamite fishing was killed instantly in an explosion at sea in Getafe town. The victim was identified as one Edwin Dano, 40, married and a resident of Pandanon island, Getafe. Dano was killed in a freak accident that took place about 6 am last Nov. 27 in the seawaters off Getafe town. He was suspected to be engaging in illegal fishing with the use of dynamites but Tuesday turned out to be his last. Dano was still holding a stick of dynamite when it exploded prematurely, causing his instantaneous death. An unidentified companion was reported injured in the blast.

The incidence of illegal fishing has been a constant source of irritation to law enforcers in coastal towns. Illegal fishermen simply lie low when there is an intensive campaign but return to their old ways when authorities lower their guard. Meanwhile, police are investigating the killing of a farmer in Inabanga town who was shot and killed along with his carabao. The victim was identified as one Viviano Divinagracia, 39, a resident of Barangay Datag, Inabanga. Initial investigation revealed that the victim left his house about 5:30 am last Nov. 26 to graze his carabao. At about 6 am , neighbors heard the sound of gunfire coming from the place where the victim had taken his carabao. When they rushed to the place, they found Divinagracia dead with bullet wounds on the left side of his face, right chest and back. His carabao was also dead as a result of gunshot wounds. Responding policemen recovered two empty shells of an M-16 Armalite and an empty shell of a caliber .45 revolver. Police investigators are still trying to determine the motive for the killing.
