1 killed by 2 twisters hit; 100 homes blown up

Two powerful twisters hit two islets of Bien Unido and Carlos P. Garcia towns Monday leaving one person dead and reducing 100 homes into piles of crumpled light building materials. The islets of Butan and Gaos off Pres. Carlos P. Garcia were hardly hit by the swirling wind, this according to CPG town Vice-Mayor Nestor Abad.

The fatality was from Mawmawan, Bien Unido town. In a check with B-Unido Mayor Niño Rey Boniel yesterday, he estimated that millions worth of seaweeds in the town's seaweed farms were destroyed. Mayor Boniel identified the lone fatality as Lalaine Abrasada, 13 of the island barangay of Mawmawan. She was killed by a falling G-melina tree. The tree was toppled down as a result of the strong wind. In the case of CPG town, V-Mayor Abad said initial findings of the Municipal Disaster Coordinating Council (MDCC) showed that some 50 houses in Butan and another 50 houses in Gaos were damaged. No human casualties were reported in the two islets. As to the amount of damage in the two islets, Abad could not make any estimate.

He said MDCC is contemplating to use the calamity fund to help the affected families. But he has yet to inform Mayor Tesalonica Boyboy if it was possible that the town's calamity fund could be used for emergency relief. The lady mayor was out of town. The families mostly affected by the cyclone according to the vice-mayor were fisherfolks. At the same time, V-Mayor Abad expressed thanks that his municipality was spared from the wrath of Typhoon Lando which hit Cebu and some parts of Bohol last Monday.

SEAWEED DAMAGE

In a damage estimate provided to the Post, Mayor Boniel confirmed that more than 1,000 hectares of seaweed farms were destroyed off the island-barangays of Bilangbilangan and Hingutanan. Visibly surprised by the force of the twister, Mayor Boniel assailed Pag-asa's failure of providing an accurate forecast of the coming typhoon. After assessing the damage, the mayor said he will utilize the 30% of the calamity fund of his town for rehabilitation. He also alerted the residents in the coastal areas for another strong typhoon. Meanwhile a sketchy report bared that a landslide occurred in barangay Lusong, Buenavista town along the national highway but no one was reported injured. Another report indicated that a river in San Miguel town overflowed and some farms of barangays Poblacion and Bayongan were adversely affected.
