Rambol sa Loon sees ‘King Leon' in making

The pride of Loon, a super-bantamweight in the making- -Leon Maratas lived up to his billing as the future “King Leon” of the ring when he triumphed over Rico Genon of Butuan City during the fiesta boxing bout dubbed as ”Rambol sa Loon” held on September 9, 2007 at the Loon Cultural and Sports Center. With prowess comparable to Manny Paquiao's, the home-grown fist from barangay Cabacungan, in Cabilao beat up Genon from start to the final seconds of Round 10. The jam-packed crowd roared but of applause as Maratas rained Genon with wicked right hooks and thundering straight lefts. Yet, Genon could have stored enough strength during his length of reign as ring warrior to have maintained his stead against the solid punches of Maratas. For the Butuanon's stubborn bull-like attacks, Maratas had to exhaust all the boxing tactics he learned in his arsenal as one of the boys of the famed ALA stable back in Cebu. The presence of boxing patron Antonio Lopez Aldeguer and fellow ALA-boy World Boxing Organization lightweight champion Cesar Amonsot at the ringside gave additional inspiration to Maratas who improved his record to 9-0.

In the other bouts, the pride of Tagbilaran City- -Glen Masicampo gave a thrilling display of fistpower as he knocked out Jojo Arnado of Cagayan de Oro City. Masicampo's stinging blows to the head and body of Arnado were so devastating that the latter crumpled in just a minute and 19 seconds in the fourth round, making a shortcut of their scheduled 10-round brawl. Arnado could hardly get up with legs shaking. The Ranan brothers of Jagna were not so fortunate in their respective fights. Although a valiant fighter, bantamweight John Clifford Ranan was outpointed by Mark Gil Melligen of Bacolod City in their eight-round clash, while younger brother John Mark lost to Marjo Borres of Cebu City in their six-round battle. In the amateur bouts, only two out of ten Loon fighters fell to their Balilihan opponents while three of Calape's ring warriors lost their matches to Balilihan counterparts.

In summary, Joseph Gastones of Loon defeated Anjomarie Jorgeo of Balilihan; Ogie Imbat-Loon defeated Anthony Biloy-Balilihan; Ryan Tocmo-Balilihan defeated Raul Reducto-Calape; Eden Mark Larido-Loon defeated Silverio Guingo-Balilihan; Levi John Legitimas-Loon defeated John Roque Jasmin-Balilihan; Ruel Tocmo-Balilihan defeated Renante Reducto-Calape; Bernie Comendador-Balilihan defeated Ruel Andoy-Calape; Louie Legitimas-Loon defeated Astrid Buyo-Balilihan; Crisanto Jasmin-Balilihan defeated Mark Dichos-Loon; Juner Romero-Loon defeated Camilo Limocon-Balilihan; Nerwin Limocon-Balilihan defeated Nathaniel Masadas-Loon, Peter Reducto-Calape defeated Joseph Ramada-Loon; John Luke Lofranco-Loon defeated Gerald Guingo-Balilihan, and the last match Joselito Ramada of Loon defeated Mike Lapinig of Calape. Loon Mayor Lloyd Peter M. Lopez, M.D., with Vice Mayor Edwin R. Ladeza and ABAP-Loon president- -SB Member Ignacio Castil Jr., handed plaques of recognition to ABAP Region VII president Nemesio Monton for Leon Maratas, WBO lightweight champ Cesar Amonsot and WBO super bantamweight champ Rey “Boom-Boom” Bautista. The “Rambol sa Loon” slugfest was presented by SSG Sports Promotions in cooperation with the Municipality of Loon Sports Commission and ABAP-Loon.
