Rush Hour

Haste makes waste.

What was emerging as a monumental sweep turned into horror as Mexican Daniel Ponce de Leon pummeled a charging Rey “Boom Boom” Bautista into submission with about 30 seconds left in the first hour. With his shock defeat to the seasoned defending champion who had Aztec blood running in his veins, Boom Boom practically called off a victory celebration in his native Bohol . By most accounts, Boom Boom's over-eagerness did him in. In his excitement to finish off de Leon with aplomb, he ran smacked into the Mexican's vaunted haymakers that sent his legs wobbling. Even the boy's father admitted that his son's impatience was the culprit in his defeat that gave Mexico some measure of respect after losing the first five fights to the Philippines to hand over the Cup it won over Thailand two years ago. Indeed, Boom Boom was like a scene straight out of “Rush Hour”, except that the monster hit now showing on the big screen is already on its third installment while the Boholano boxer was knocked out cold in the first round yet. As if though to add insult to injury, Gov. Erico Aumentado announced to the national media that he would not push through with his promise to undertake the road concreting project in Boom Boom's native Can-olin in Candijay town. In his haste to be quoted by the media, Aumentado said something that he must have regretted later. As subsequent reactions poured in, it seems like the governor received more flak than the punches Boom Boom got from Ponce de Leon. There is no need to add to the steady stream of brickbats that are coming Aumentado's way. To this moment, there is really no reassurance that we have heard the last of the negative reactions. Boom Boom has nothing to be ashamed of. Impatience is normal among the young. If it can be called as such, Boom Boom's only fault was to charge straight into the raging bull that was de Leon. On any given day, bravado is a plus factor to a boxer who intends to be a crowd-pleaser. It's a different thing for one who has been in business for more than 40 years. He can lay claim to a lot of things, including making history as the only Boholano governor who has served three consecutive terms, but youth is not one of them. Between the two, people can easily forgive Boom Boom for being impulsive. It is doubtful if people can be that forgiving for Aumentado's indiscretion. A lot of things happen during Rush Hour. Some of them we will regret later.
