Donaire comes home a ‘hero'

TALIBON–As quick punches, memories of companionship for 13 years with her grandfather flash in reminiscence for boxing hero, Nonito “Flash” Donaire Jr. who had been away from home. Clad with his champion's belt and corsage around his neck, a semblance of coming-home hero- -an honored guest. His 13 years of childhood was with Lolo Kikoy, whom he reunited after many years of separation. Flash was just a simple and friendly little boy when he left his grandfather, Francisco “Kikoy” Gonzales. There was no signs that he would become a boxing hero one day. But fate shaped him into a champion in the International Boxing Federation (IBF) and the International Boxing Organization (IBO) Light Flyweight Division champion.

Being his birthplace and childhood venue, the small Sitio of Tunggo, now Fatima, in barangay San Jose has always been a source of sentimental memories while he was away from home. Hundreds of “paisanos”, led by Mayor Juanario Item, met Flash with a hero's welcome during his courtesy call to the local officials Wednesday last week. At the office of Mayor Item, joined his Lolo Kikoy and close relatives with emotions wrapping the moments. Indeed, it is not as simple as before- -giant TV stations sending crew to cover his trips and bookings. All his feat as a boxing hero is credited to his father who was the one who developed his skills with the blessing of the Almighty God. He developed self-discipline, and perseverance to sustain the exercises. It was but, the making of a hero. “Whatever you want you can have it as long as you have patience and focus.

If you want boxing then go on boxing. Focus in your ambition as to what you want to be is very important in life,” Flash told the local media. Mayor Item, for his part, expressed recognition to the honor that Flash had recently brought for this town, saying “he was able to put the name of Talibon in world map. He gave prestige and honor to this town”. As a gesture of gratitude, the mayor, with the full support of the SB members and the rest of local officials and municipal employees, prepared the hero's welcome for Flash, is now considered the idol of the youth. The hero's motorcade amazed the crowd at the town's thoroughfares and those waiting at the Carlos P. Garcia Multi-Purpose Center where a short program was held. Peter Polestico, Human Resource Management Officer IV, hosted the program. He was joined by Municipal Councilor Gherson Dulang. Vice Mayor Resituto Auxtero gave the welcome address, while Mayor Item delivered a short message. Item also cited the father of the boxing hero, Nonilito Donaire, Sr., his Lolo Kikoy and relatives. Municipal Councilor Marcos Aurestila gave the closing remarks.
