2014 IN THE 21ST CENTURY

Someone in 2010, commented that a great event in 2014 is the key that would determine whether the 21st Century would bring peace and prosperity or war and poverty. The world today faces the biggest problems ever, which necessitate world leaders' further concentrated commitment and action to respond to the fears that it raises. The Ukrainian conflict has been described by Western leaders as “the biggest crisis in Europe since the end of the Cold War.” The United Nations described the Syrian conflict as “the biggest humanitarian emergency of our era.” The conflict in Israel and Gaza Strip has seen some of the deadliest violence in years between Israel and Palestinian militants.

The rise of Islamic State (IS) reputed for its brutal tactics, trying to establish an Islamic caliphate in the world, roused fear and anger across the world. The Boko Haram, Nigeria's militant, the Al-Qaeda's followers in Yemen and North Africa, Al-Shabab, Islamist militant in Somalia and the Taliban's influence in Afghanistan and Pakistan, continue to harass governments and people in the Middle East region. While the World Health Organization (WHO) have describedthe Ebola outbreak in Western Africa as the “largest and most severe and most complex they have ever seen.”Because of fear, the supply of the millions of stacks of rice is affected in the region. How we face the future today corresponds to whom we put our trust and security.

Tidbits:

The world agreed to stop using CC14 as part of the Vienna Convention on Protection of the Ozone Layer and its Montreal Protocol, which attained universal ratification in 2009.

PAUL Newman, chief scientist, NASA said, "People believe the emissions of ozone-depleting substances have stopped because of the Montreal Protocol.”

NASA recently said, that carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) is still being spewed into the atmosphere from an unknown source. It is evident that there are either unidentified industrial leakages, large emissions from contaminated sites, or unknown CCl4 sources.
