Bomber linked to drug lord, militant

An official police report has confirmed that the man behind last Monday's deadly bombing at the public market of Trinidad town which had claimed three lives and critically injured several others is a member of a militant group in Bohol responsible for street rallies in Tagbilaran City, and has been involved in the illegal drug trade belonging to the group of slain drug lord Owen Rosales. Police Senior Supt. Dennis Palo Agustin, Bohol PNP director, has said that Dinoberto Polistico Fuentes, who lobbed a hand grenade at Trinidad public market last Monday afternoon that killed three and maimed several innocent persons was last seen during a mass rally in Tagbilaran City staged by Bohol militant groups during Pres. Aquino's most recent State of the Nation Address (SONA). “Based on our initial investigation, siya (Dinoberto) yong nanununtok during sa rally against SONA,” Agustin said.

The revelation has raised fears that street protests orchestrated by militant groups in Bohol would pose a high security risk in the city as some of their members are allegedly in possession of illegal drugs and explosives, the City PNP has told media. City Administrator Edi Borja is expected to call for a consultation with the provincial government, the police, and the army regarding the danger of issuing City Hall permits to militant groups who stage mass protests in Tagbilaran City. “During the tactical interrogation conducted on the aforementioned suspect, same confirmed that he is a relative of late Arman Quisto, one of the drug personalities who is a member of Owen Rosales Group. Accordingly, he (Dinoberto) joined the Trinidad-Talibon Farmers Association (TTFA) in year 2008 as activist and stopped on year 2013 when he joined the said group,” according to a police report filed by the Trinidad Police Station, signed by its chief, Police Senior Inspector Aldrin Zapa Villacampa.

Police have filed multiple murder and multiple frustrated murder charges against a member of a militant farmers' group in Bohol who was behind last Monday's deadly public market bombing in Trinidad town, 115 kilometers from the capital city of Tagbilaran. Three were killed and 11 others seriously wounded after a hand grenade, lobbed by a 21-year-old farmer believed to be under the influence of illegal drugs, exploded Monday at the public market of Trinidad town, which celebrated its 67th founding anniversary. Citizens nearby immediately tackled the suspect, whom police had identified as Dinoberto Polistico Fuentes, a resident of Barangay San Vicente, Trinidad, and member of Talibon-Trinidad Integrated Farmers Association (TTIFA), according to Villacampa.

Villacampa said Fuentes could have targeted the town's gym, which was jam-packed with thousands of children and spectators who watched a dance cultural showdown held during the town's founding anniversary. Witnesses said Fuentes took out a hand grenade from the side pocket of his pants and lobbed it at a crowded area without regard for the lives of innocent victims. Villacampa said two persons – Nestor Bernales of Mabini town and Fidela Macua Cajes of Bien Unido town – were killed on the spot. Those three critically wounded were rushed to a hospital in Tagbilaran City. The 11 seriously injured were brought to nearby town hospitals. When Fuentes was arrested by the police, he was subjected to a mandatory frisk. Police seized from him a plastic sachet containing white crystalline granules believed to be shabu and crumbled dried leaves of marijuana wrapped with cigarette paper. With the confiscation of the prohibited drugs, police's suspicion surfaced that the suspect could be “high in shabu” when he lobbed the grenade inside the public market, according to an initial investigation.

Police told Bohol reporters that they would look into the involvement of Fuentes in a non-government organization (NGO) that is supporting TTIFA. Law enforcers would also probe whether the grenade was originally intended by Fuentes for the town folks inside the gym who were celebrating the town's birthday. Meanwhile, Gov. Edgar. M. Chatto has condemned the attack, describing it as “atrocious and non-reflective of the Boholano way of life.” Chatto has ordered Senior Supt. Dennis Palo Agustin, Bohol PNP director, to probe the blast and arrest Fuentes' companions. When the governor received the news on Trinidad bombing, he was in Malacañang Monday where Pres. Aquino administered an oath-taking for the new officials of the Regional Development Council (RDC-7) in which Chatto, as appointed by the President, sits as the chairperson.

The governor also ordered Provincial Administrator Alfonso “Ae” Damalerio II to extend financial assistance to the blast survivors and see to it that they are given sufficient care. Supt. Joie Pacito Yape Jr., information officer of the Bohol police command, said the police are even shocked that a 21-year old possessed an explosive. Agustin, on the other hand, has called on local government units in Bohol and town police stations to sustain their war against illegal drugs, which he said had claimed another innocent casualties. Meanwhile, the Trinidad Police Station has released the names of victims who were already declared out of danger and are no longer confined in the hospital, and they are identified as: 1) ROSEMARIE O. LABAJO, 2) LORNA CAPILLARES 3) JUAN O. SUMALINOG, and 4) ALJUNE T. DUNGOL.
