Bohol crime rate drops

By REY ANTHONY CHIU

Crimes dipped by 71 cases or roughly 10% in June this year compared to last month, in a possible indication of police community cooperation triumph against crimes. Crimes recorded all over Bohol in the fiesta month of May reached 728 or occurring at an average daily rate of 23.4, while in June, police crime statisticians picked only about 657 cases or a 21.9.Camp Dagohoy however pointed to the flurry of fiesta related activities and social gatherings as well as the easily available booze as a possible cause of crimes, while the high police presence and visibility during the class opening month could have deterred crimes. Police Superintendent Jeffrey Caballes, who reported the crime situationer in Bohol during the recent Provincial Peace and Order Council Meeting Thursday, July 31, also pointed out the slight increase of non-index crimes in June, a sign that the police response to averting criminality in Bohol is making a dent. Non index crimes in June reached 273 while index crimes reached 384 for a sum of 657.

This is against May's non-index crimes recorded at 270 and 458 index crimes for a total of 728, PSupt Caballes, who currently heads the Camp Dagohoy based Provincial Public Safety Company showed. Caballes presented the police provincial camp report in lieu of PSSupt. Dennis Agustin, who was attending a workshop-training in Cebu. During the month of June, topping the crime list is theft, which went as high as 152 or 40% of the crime pie, which is two over May's 150 cases. Most visible decrease in crime for the two-month comparative is physical injuries, which had 197 in May to 127 in June. That pegged a difference of 70 cases lesser in June. Physical injuries formed 33% of the total crime share for the month.

In fact, of the 127 cases of physical injuries for the month, only 33 of were really physical harm incidents, according to the Caballes report. Ninety-four cases of the 127 reported physical injuries were vehicular accidents. Earlier, PPOC members have asked Camp Dagohoy statisticians to segregate physical injuries types, to avert potential misunderstanding that Bohol is not investor friendly, based on the very high recorded cases of physical injuries. For the first time, Camp Dagohoy showed that what have been reported high crime incidences listed under physical injuries are largely due to vehicular accidents and not that Boholanos are troublesome.
