PContrary to earlier reports alleging that a high-ranking rebel detainee was not treated well, the Bohol Detention and Rehabilitation Center (BDRC), managed by the Bureau of Jail and Penology, has dismissed such allegation as “misunderstanding” and clarified that the high-risk BDRC inmate has been provided with all his needs since he was committed to the provincial jail. “Roy Erecre is in good hands,” said Senior Inspector Jose Rusylvi Abueva, BDRC head, in a chance interview. “He's treated well,” Abueva added, referring to Erecre, a second-in-rank official of the Communist the Party of the Philippines-New People's Army (CPA-NPA), who was arrested in Davao City early in May this year.
Erecre, who is facing criminal charges in Bohol in relation to an ambush in 1990 which killed two army officers in Carmen, Bohol, is currently detained at BDRC despite apprehensions of the Boholano people over his security status. “There is no truth to allegation that he is being ex-communicated,” Abuevasaid. “Erecre has access to any person who wishes to visit him.” Abueva said that long before Erecre was detained at BDRC, the jail has long implemented a stricter inspection on inmates' visitors in the wake of illegal drugs confiscated from two jail visitors on February 11, 2014. “We do not single out Erecre's visitors,” Abueva said. “All visitors at BDRC undergo the same strict inspection scheme as we want to avoid the entry of illegal drugs in the jail.” The BDRC chief said that Erecre has been allowed to be visited by his legal counsel, medical team, family members, and friends and sympathizers from non-government groups. “Although we consider him as a high-risk detainee, we do not discriminate individuals from visiting him (Erecre),” Abueva noted.
In fact, he said, Erecre is well-provided with his basic needs, as mandated by law, admitting however that there are limitations to Erecre's access to other inmates, for his own safety. Erecre also known as Vide Alguna, Toto and Pasyong, together with his girlfriend Judith Jaron Niog, were arrested in Davao City early last May a combined elements of the military and police. His arrest came following a week of surveillance by military and police intelligence operatives. Erecre is the secretary of the Central Visayas Regional Committee of the CPP-NPA and carries a P5.4 million bounty for his arrest. From Davao City, Erecre was transported to Cebu City where he was also facing court charges, for a court appearance. From Cebu, Erecre, a Boholano, was then shipped to Bohol, his hometown, where he is facing criminal charges.
