Time after time, the Filipino people are clamoring for transformation and change in the government. This groaning for a change is borne out of love for the country because people are getting tired of corruption and blatant disregard of our laws by those whom we trust as lawmakers. The irony is that lawmakers are supposed to be guardians and implementors of the law, however, some intentionally and unashamedly turned to be lawbreakers. The long list of corruptions, from previous administrations up to the present, would surely move the Filipino people to cry out for a true and genuine change in the government. In other words, the unveiling series of corruptions have created a strong desire and hunger for transformation and reformation in the hearts of the Filipino people. This hunger for a genuine change should motivate us to actively participate in the process of decision making and policy building within the government.
Just like what happened in the 16th century Europe when the Reformers wanted to effect reformation and transformation because of gross corruption and immorality among those who were supposed to be guardians of morals, we can do the same as a Filipino nation to our government. The wind of reformation and transformation had swept across the entire Europe during that period because within the hearts of the people at that time, there was real hunger for a change, a passion within that drove them to powerfully effect change and transformation in all segments of society.
We have gone with a two or three series of EDSA Revolution. We have witnessed how the spirit of unity among our people could peacefully effect change in the government. However, our people have easily forgotten the lessons of EDSA. We become stagnant and do business as usual until our nation is now on the brink of total moral decay where the “culture of corruption” is the game of the day. Enough is enough! Let us put an end to this evil practice! As what I have said in my previous articles, we cannot legislate morality. No amount of legislations can change the heart of the people. As a matter of fact, our country is considered to be as a “nation of so many laws” which some of them are just duplications if not replications. From national level down to the provinces, cities, municipalities, barangays down to the purok level, we have various conflicting laws for people to be confused. The problem lies in the heart of every human person. The heart is totally corrupt according to the Word of God (Jeremiah 17:9). The Holy Scriptures describe the heart of every human being as “ wicked and that every inclination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil all the time” (Genesis 6:5).
It's only through the power of the gospel energize by the Holy Spirit of God that this evil heart within can be changed (Romans 1:16-17). The Filipino nation has a reputation being the only Christian nation in Asia, yet the irony of it, is that we are the most corrupt nation in all of Asia if not in the whole world. It's time for us as a nation to bend our knees before the one and the true living God and repent for our sins and ask God for His forgiveness and national healing.
