UB prexy dies of septic shock

Lawyer Victoriano B. Tirol Jr., PhD, University of Bohol President, has died of septic shock, and not of prostate cancer, as earlier reported in the newspaper and radio broadcast. This was the official statement of his widow, Dr. Cristeta Balili-Tirol, UB Vice President for Finance, and his son, Dr. Victoriano B. Tirol III, UB Assistant Vice President for Administration, amid news items citing wrong cause of death of the university president. Per medical report of St. Luke's Medical Center, the late president was rushed to the Intensive Care Unit at 8 p.m. on March 21, 2014. The attending doctors diagnosed an infection in his blood which sporadically spread in the whole body. Although the condition became stable after the administration of anti-biotic, the president again suffered a fatal septic shock at around 10 p.m. and was declared clinically dead by doctors at 11 p.m.

In early February, the university president was treated with steroids to arrest his increasing creatinine level - a medical option to treat his kidneys. However, the same steroids weakened his immunity systems paving way to simple infections. He first suffered prostate cancer in 2000 but was declared cancer-free the following year. The cancer recurred in January 2013 but Atty. Tirol was again declared cancer-free in December 2013. Yesterday morning, March 29, 2014, the remains of Atty. Victoriano B. Tirol, Jr. was taken to Cristal e-College for a necrological service. He then made a brief visit to UB Victoriano D. Tirol Advanced Learning Center in Taloto District, this city, before proceeding to the University of Bohol gymnasium in the afternoon for another necrological rites. In the evening, his body was transferred to Graham Leopando Belarmino Tirol Memorial Church, Booy, Tagbilaran City for another vigil. On March 30, 2014, a Divine Worship is set at 1:00 to 2:30 p.m., an hour before the late Atty. Victoriano B. Tirol, Jr. will be laid to his final rest in a Masonic Interment Rites at 3:30 in the afternoon of the same day at Victoria Memorial Park, Taloto District, Tagbilaran, City. (L.A.Boncales)
