HEALTH THREAT

It is reported in the US, that the latest scale of infections had become a matter of “national concern” with 600 cases compared to just five in 2006.The NHS has declared a “national health threat”. Anti-microbial resistance (AMR) means in plain terms, that antibiotics are, increasingly, no longer effective against bacteria. Bacteria cause infections. Whether you are frail or healthy, untreated infections can cause you to die. A blister from walking, a scratch from gardening, or a cut knee in the playground, could possibly become deadly incidents. The antibiotics we use to treat them, like amoxicillin, are increasingly becoming ineffective. Bacteria are beating the antibiotics. It is time we realised this. Our bodies might have been able to fight off, but infections caused by bacteria might kill us. The whole branches of medicine depend on us not getting infected. Surgery and chemotherapy for exampleare regularly accompanied by courses of antibiotics. The world faced the threat of Aids thirty years ago. We are confronted with another critical medical threat now. For the reason that people overuse antibiotics, misprescribe, misuse, even apply in agriculture etc., partly because of tiny, highly advanced enemies, the bacteria. This is the situation we face now.Have the world leaders started addressing this predicament?

Tidbits:

The US National Oceanic Atmospheric and Administration announced an El Nino is expected to start this summer. Globally, it can mean an even hotter year coming up and billions of dollars in losses for food crops. An El Nino is a warming of the central Pacific once every few years, from a combination of wind and waves in the tropics. Experts said, if this El Nino is a strong one, global temperatures, probably in 2015, could be in near record breaking territory. Australia and South Africa maybe dry while parts of South America become dry and parts become wet in an El Nino. Peru maybe getting floods and poorer fishing. Some areas benefit. Some don't.

G.R. No. 162419, July 10, 2007, PAUL V. SANTIAGO, vs.CF SHARP CREW MANAGEMENT, INC.

Courtesy of atty. Fidel Borja

Respondent's act of preventing petitioner from departing the port of Manila and boarding "MSV Seaspread" constitutes a breach of contract, giving rise to petitioner's cause of action. Respondent unilaterally and unreasonably reneged on its obligation to deploy petitioner and must therefore answer for the actual damages he suffered.
