Boholano swimmer bags 5 gold medals to break Phl record

 

Tagged by three-time Olympian and Philippine Sports Commissioner Akiko Thompson as potential swimmer for the Olympics in last year's Regional BatangPinoy in Tacloban, Rian Marco Adiong-Tirol proved his worth when he broke two Philippine records in swimming competitions and claimed five gold medals during the 2014 Batang Pinoy National Championships held last January 28 to February 1, 2014 at Panaad Park and Stadium in Bacolod City. Tirol who swam in 12 and under boys category won five gold medals in 50m. butterfly, 50m.breaststroke, 50m.backstroke, 100m.breaststroke and 200m breaststroke. In the 50m.breaststroke, Tirol broke the Philippine record of 33.32 seconds established by Joshua Acain of the National Capital Region in the 2006 Palarong Pambansa by hitting the clock at 33.03. He also broke the Philippine record in 100m. posted by Raffy Hechanova of West Visayas Region in 2002 at 115.65 seconds with his new record time of 115.52 seconds. Tirol is one of the two athletes in the whole competition who swept five gold medals in five individual events. This is the maximum number of events that an individual swimmer can participate.

As high-performing athlete, Tirol will undergo in a selection process technically conducted by the different National Sports Association under the supervision of the Philippine Olympic Committee and Philippines Sports Commission. After passing the selection process, the seventh grade swimmer of the University of Bohol Victoriano D. Tirol-Advanced Learning Center will take part in the national developmental pool that will be trained and prepared for the 2nd Youth Olympic Games in Nanjing, China in 2014 for other international age group competitions. Inspite of the rigorous training, Tirol managed to be a consistent honor pupil and campus leader. Batang Pinoy which caters in and out of school youth is an annual program of the Philippine Sports Commission in partnership with the Department of Interior and Local Government and Department of Education. It is at par with Palarong Pambansa of DepEd which mainly focused on in-school youth. Other VDT-ALC swimmers who qualified in the 2014 Batang Pinoy National Championships include Patrick Louie Birad, John Jemuel Lopez, Apollo Pranku Fucanan, Obed Baloria, Zean Angelo Plateros, Jess Kenneth Omac, Felliesse KarylIbale and Gwynneth Ticong. The UB swimmers under Bohol delegation were chaperoned by Dr. Victoriano B. Tirol III, UB assistant vice president for administration and team manager and Coach Vincent Indig. (L.A.Boncales)
