Since we wrote in this corner about solving the traffic problem in front of the Bohol Wisdom School last week, we stopped passing by the area from 6 to 7 o'clock in the morning and from 5 to 6 o'clock in the afternoon as we might lose our temper and engage in uncalled fights against other motorists. However, our mole yesterday called us up and informed us that the traffic situation in the area has improved last week. Well, we might not be talking to the moon in this column last Sunday when we amplified on how to solve a traffic problem in wisdom. By wisdom, we meant the Bohol Wisdom School. Some readers might have come up with the wisdom on how to solve the traffic congestion in front of that school during these peak hours. We will try to pass the area this week and found out if our mole was correct.

But elsewhere in the city, we did pick up one good quarrel with a tricycle driver who did not only pose a traffic hazard in one corner of the City Square. We will no longer reveal the number of the tricycle as the driver may become a star. Following a tricycle unit would really test your patience as a driver. The tricycle drivers today are very aggressive. We did not know where they got such aggressiveness. Their number in the city with almost 2,000 tricycle units could perhaps be one of the reasons of their being aggressive. When we tried to make a right turn in order to park at the City Square, a tricycle driver was trying to negotiate passengers in the corner thereby blocking our way. The tricycle driver stood up in the street and motioned us to pass by in one corner as he was busy negotiating with his passengers. When the passengers walked away from his tricycle, the driver shouted and started to berate us. We opened our doors and wanted to engage the driver in a duel, verbal of course. But he drove fast and eluded from a potential enemy.

That is what we meant by being aggressive. Today, tricycle drivers think that they are the kings of the street in Tagbilaran City. Their number one rule is take more and more passengers if they want to and refuse to convey them if they would not. We will definitely argue to those who claim that it is poverty that made the tricycle drivers so aggressive today. Even during peak hours, a lot of tricycle units are being parked in one corner of the city as the tricycle drivers are playing cards and texting or doing something else. If it is poverty, then these tricycle drivers will have to capitalize on these peak hours in order to maximize their income. When they want to pick up passengers, they will parade in front of the Bohol Quality, Alturas, Shopper's Mart and Plaza Marcela and thereby causing traffic congestion in these areas.

By being aggressive too, we forget about traffic rules and regulation when we deal with tricycle drivers in the city. Taking left or right turn, tricycle drivers will just raise their left hands a second before making their turn. Most of the time, the vehicle following them will try to avoid hitting them, or else. What really gave us a headache is when tricycle drivers stop at the sides of the street in order to drop or pick up passengers. They drove with impunity in the streets and if you are following them, just pray that you will not be engaged in an accident. The city's traffic lights would better be dismantled when the tricycle drivers ignored it. The real culprit here is not the tricycle drivers, others said. It is the passenger who dictated the tricycle driver on what to do. It would perhaps be a question on who comes first, the egg or the chicken?

Our son, who takes the driver's seat when we are aboard our vehicle, has all the complaints in the world against tricycle drivers. But we told our son to just calm down. We do have our altercation and a case against tricycle drivers in the past and after the tricycle driver will kneel to ask for forgiveness as they have no other income to pay for the damage incurred in our vehicle, we have no other way but to give in. When we were still a politician, tricycle drivers in the city will assure you of their support and all your complaints against them will have to diminish in exchange for political consideration. That's what makes them the real king of the street in Tagbilaran.

POSTSCRIPT: Well, we went to Montana, Baclayon last Sunday afternoon and caught BG taking his siesta in his farm house. We are happy that the ultra sound of his goat is negative. So we feasted on it and talked with Pareng Ric Obedencio and Pedy Bolanio. Our discussion may be a reminiscence of the past as we compare today's generation of our writers and broadcasters. We were told that Mayor Baba Yap and Councilor Alexander Lim were there before we arrived. We missed such an encounter...There's more when we return. |
