Gone were the days when the bottomline of business was (all the time) profit. These days entrepreneurs have given cognizance of their social responsibility to the community where their businesses thrive, giving credence to the dictum “I am my brother’s keeper.” The October 15 quake that left billions worth of devastation all over the Province of Bohol and the City of Tagbilaran was one such tragedy that brought to the fore a level of generosity from those who were fortunate enough not to be adversely affected by the catastrophe. Individuals, organizations (both public and private), and establishments, without being cajoled into ameliorative action, voluntarily flexed their muscles and lent some helping hands, not only to empathize and sympathize with the less fortunate, but to part from their material belongings for the welfare of the intensity 7.2 earthquake victims. It was a spontaneous outpouring of humanitarianism seldom known.

One business conglomerate which readily responded to the call was the AGC (Alturas Group of Companies), most particularly Alturas Supermarket Corporation (ASC), the pioneer in revolutionizing wholesale and retail trading in Bohol. The top management, always aware of the priorities, decided to cancel the 26th Alturas Drum and Bugle Corps Showdown scheduled on November 23, 2013. The reason is simple: the immediate needs of the Boholanos who suffered from the torment should be addressed first. Leo Aranzado Quicoy (LAQ) is the Manager of ASC. These are excerpts of an interview conducted while the aftershocks were still nightmarish.

LMP: Back to business?

LAQ: By God’s grace, Alturas Supermarket opened last October 18 for the convenience of the public, although to date concentration is on grocery and other necessities. But this time, it’s not just a business concern. We are aware of the people’s immediate needs, especially those very negatively affected by the quake.

LMP: What do you mean “not just business?” Any other concern?

LAQ: Ang mga biktima, ilabi na kadtong tua sa kalungsuran...nanginahanglan sila ug tabang. This is a Corporate Social Responsibility that we cannot ignore.

LMP: Unsa man diay ang inyong gihimo, to address this concern?

Store Manager Leo A. Quicoy once dreamed of becoming a Priest; but even if he did not make it, his Christian tenets are still intact. Like, helping others in their time of need. Which is also the dictum Alturas observes.

The 28th anniversary of Alturas Supermarket may lack the funfare and glitter of yesteryears but, undoubtedly, cancelling this year’s Showdown for the benefit of the quake victims is a very Christian move.
