Today’s International Community

The ideals of a worthy world government according to Einstein, had to have greater authority and military strength than any individual government. After World War II of 1945, the United Nations General Assembly was founded, and the Security Council was created. The world’s troubles were determined as someone call upon the International Community to act. Our problem today is the “International Community” does no longer exist. With the decline of the US and Europe or China, which major powers would meet to determine the world’s destiny?

Some experts say the International Community is more hope than a reality. That major powers of today do not agree on the rules that should govern the world, no agreement on how to update the Security Council, much less on the penalties against a country that violates the rules. Reports say the G-20 group of rich countries because of the many members lack authority and capacity, which resulted in a “multilateralism’s dilemma.” The world’s present problems such as climate change, the spread of nuclear weapons, economic free trade, cyber security, territorial expansionism, poverty and human sufferings that look to the International Community for solutions will be disappointed. There is now less space for achieving win-wins in international negotiations. These events are leading to the end of world government, where most nations are not willing to cooperate but each fighting to preserve their own. Our world today is disordered and more dangerous than it should be. Accordingly, governments today need to seek understandings among related regional countries that are willing to do their best to adopt common programs in order to get something done for their countries and move forward.

Tidbits:

Some are afraid that the United States with the birth rate at its lowest in recorded history, is heading toward a demographic crisis in which too few children will lead to too few workers to build – and pay for – a prosperous future. One commented that if it turns out that they do need more working-age people to pay into pension and insurance programs and fund schools for American children, millions of potential immigrants from many parts of the world are willing – even eager – to join their ranks. Another said, they would do better if they focused their attention on the wellbeing of however many of them there are instead of worrying about the fact that there might not be enough of them in the future.

This column is thankful to the new leadership of the City Hall for the responsive action through Engr. Busano. Keep up the good works.
