Biofuel Impact

Ten years ago, popular supports for biofuel growth and development were very high especially in the U.S. and in many countries. However recently, the UN and the Environmental Organizations report the dire impact of the production of biofuels on the environment, land and food supply. The serious effect when crops are used for biofuels, created an insubstantial supply of foodincreasing hunger among the world’s poorest people. Report says that the expansion of plants grown for the biofuel market was consuming up land previously used for food production. Due to biofuels targets and sponsorships, global warming, land grabbing and the soaring of food prices are seen in recent years Britain's climate and energy minister, Ed Davey said, “We’ve made a real mistake in the EU on biofuels and we’ve got to end that mistake, the sooner the better.” Oxfam’s EU policy advisor Marc-Oliver Herman said, “The EU must stop this absurd trend of using food for fuel, and to rapidly phase out all support to land-based biofuels."

Meanwhile the global biotech industry is promoting hard against new proposals to limit the use of food crops for biofuels before the European Parliament, whilepushing a door for other genetically modified domestic agricultural monocrops for the consumer market. Consumers are unknowingly financing hunger and environmental destruction in poor countries. Government leaders should not bow to the biotech industry pressures but be concerned for the long-term impact on the environment and human health due to biofuel production. Obsessive drive for political power and profits will pay devastating consequence to our natural world if left unchecked. We should recognize that we humans and all living species require a healthy, balanced environment and ecosystems for our survival.People and earth must go hand in hand.

Tidbits:

The "seafarers' bill of rights"convention, which sets out minimum standards and conditions for seafarers is set to come into international law in August. It received the minimum of 30 International Labour Organization (ILO) member state signatures, representing at least 33 per cent of world shipping, for it to take effect. However, some major shipping trade countries, including the USA, United Kingdom and China, have yet to ratify it.
