U.N.,GABRIELA reps all out for Kit Oppus

Vice mayoralty candidate Kit Oppus led the entire Pundok Panaghiusa slate as they hosted the 2013 Women’s Congress last April 28, 2013 at the Bohol Island State University gymnasium. At least 400 women from the different 15 barangays of this city attended the much awaited event. Rep. Luz C. Ilagan of the GABRIELA Party List and Ms. Merly Barrete-Barlaan, UN representative assistant administrator for the United Nations Liaison Office graced the occasion to the excitement of the participants. When interviewed after the successful congress, Councilor Oppus said “this is a milestone for the cause of women and children’s development and protection. It is time for the Tagbilaranon women’s voices to be heard and to take an active stand for their rights. With Councilor Baba Yap at the helm in City Hall, I can confidently say that Tagbilaran, the best is yet to come!” Just this week an adult lady resident from Ubujan district was raped.

Upon hearing of the incident from one of her leaders, Oppus rushed to the place to provide any and all assistance to the girl and her family. Not minding her own safety, Oppus went to the scene of the crime where the victim was to make sure that she was well taken cared for while waiting for the police to arrive. In a radio interview Friday, Oppus was asked about the rape incident and she said, “this is one of the main reasons why I take my advocacies for women and children to a personal level. Like the parents of that victim, I have two daughters of my own. I feel their anguish, pain and humiliation. During the same Women’s Congress, was presented the women sector’s “Wish List”, namely; Livelihood programs, peaceful living, protection from abuses, active involvement of the women sector in governance and the creation and implementation of laws for the safeguarding of women and children. expressed his solemn vow and commitment to uphold and enhance all the concerns and wishes of the women and children of this city. As in his previous sorties, Yap’s pledge of commitment was that the Pundok Panaghiusa has been serving the women and children of Tagbilaran in all of the BABA Caravan of free services for the past three years.
