BISU head in hot water over house built in mangrove site in Bool district

The Department of Environment and Natural Resources is looking into a house construction in Bool district reportedly owned by the director of the Bohol Island State University (BISU) which reportedly violated Presidential Decree 705 otherwise known as the Fishery Reform Code of the Phils. In an interview with Nestor Canda, provincial environment and natural resources officer last night, he said an ocular inspection by his men showed that the building encroached into the 20-meter salvage zone. Further inspection indicated that the construction invaded the Bool shoreline where a lush vegetation of mangroves is abundant. Efforts to contact Dr. Elpedio Magante, BISU director, the whole day yesterday proved futile, as he refused to take calls from this paper.

According to Canda, the house owner asked permission from his office to prune some of the mangroves whose branches strayed into the building. Canda warned the owner that pruning of mangroves is strictly prohibited because it constitutes illegal occupation. The PENRO even threatened the owner to file a case if the illegal occupation to a protected area will continue. Canda confirmed that the house, proposed to be a three-storey, is owned by Magante. A mini-dump truck with red plate and owned by BISU was seen parking in front of the unfinished building to haul waste materials from the construction.
