2 escapees killed in Ubay shootout

Police Supt. Constantino Paul Barot, Jr., provincial director of the Bohol Philippine National Police announced yesterday that police tracker teams are fanning out in all possible exit points in the province to hunt down the remaining escapee. Elements of SWAT led by Supt. Nicomedes Olaivar and the PNP intelligence section by Supt. Jovito Atanacio coordinated with all police stations in Bohol to track down the remaining holdout of the three prisoners who bolted the Bohol Detention and Rehabilitation Center (BDRC) last week. According to Supt. Barot, he believes that Exequiel Aniscal, 50 of San Vicente, Maribojoc town is still roaming around the province waiting for the right timing to elude arrest of pursuing policemen. BDRC guards are also forming a dragnet to capture Aniscal.

This developed as two of the three escapees from the BDRC, in this city, were killed Tuesday evening in an alleged encounter with police authorities in Purok 2, barangay Bood, Ubay town. Mario Ilaya, 23, of Tambuan, Carmen town and Bryan Ceniza, 23, of Napo, Inabanga town were pronounced dead at the Don Emilio del Valle Memorial Hospital. They sustained gunshot wounds in their body after the shootout that the escapees allegedly initiated. The third escapee, Aniscal, remained at large as he was not with the two during the shootout. Ilaya was facing robbery with violence and intimidation against persons and Ceniza was facing murder, carnapping, highway robbery and illegal possession of firearm charges while  Aniscal was facing robbery with homicide charges. Chief Supt. Atanacio said his unit, the operatives of the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG)-Bohol headed by Chief Insp. Rene Kyamko and Ubay Police headed by Senior Insp. Miguel Andeza went to the area after receiving information earlier that day from a tanod of barangay Bood about the  presence of two armed persons.

The tanod was able to confirm that the two were among of the escapees based on the photos published in the province’s local papers. Reports said the tanod saw the pictures of the escapees in the Bohol Sunday Post, a local newspaper with a big circulation in Ubay. Atanacio said the two stayed in one of the houses in Purok 2 and the operatives had to wait for the two to come out to avoid harming the other occupants of the house. When the tanod signalled that the two are outside the house, they positioned themselves and waited for the two escapees to come nearer to their location. They then identified themselves as policemen and appealed to the two to surrender. But Atanacio said the escapees instead pulled out their guns and started shooting at them. The two were armed with hand guns which they seized from BDRC guards at the time they dashed for freedom. The police fired back hitting the two in the different parts of their bodies.

Recovered from Ceniza was .45 caliber pistol with five live ammunition and while Ilaya had a .38 caliber revolver with two live ammunition and two empty shells in his possession. Ilaya, Ceniza and Aniscal escaped from the Bohol District Jail in Cabawan District in Tagbilaran City while the jail was busy in the rehearsals for the graduation ceremony of an alternative learning program at 2 p.m. Thursday. The footage from the CCTV camera showed Aniscal poked a gun at a jail officer at gate 6 and took his .45 caliber service firearm. They proceeded to Gate 2 and took the caliber .9mm service firearm of another jail guard and fled on a motorcycle parked nearby with the key left in it. It was not yet known why they were able to hold a gun inside the jail facilities.
