The wife of a labor leader who was killed allegedly due to labor matters is asking for justice for her fallen husband. Rosalito Nicanor Dumalag, 40, a resident of Pook Pantalan was gunned down at dawn last Tuesday while on his way home after calling it a day of his work as pier porter. Police investigators looking into Dumalag’s murder are zeroing in on his activities as head of the Tagbilaran City Multi-purpose Porters Cooperative. He has been chair of the coop for two years. In seeking the early solution to the crime , Marietta Dumalag said the perpetrator/s should be tracked down the earliest time possible to serve the ends of justice. The labor leader was killed near his makeshift house located at the foot of the city wharf.
Left with six children, with the youngest only two years old, the eldest 12 years old, the wife said she cannot recall that her husband has a known enemy although there were premonitions earlier to look after the welfare of their children. According to her narrative, at the time her husband was killed, she was awaken by bursts of gunfire for two consecutive times. At first, she ignored the sound of the first burst but when it was followed by another, she decided to come out only to find out her husband slumped to the ground lying in his own pool of blood. By instinct, she brought her husband to the nearby Ramiro Community Hospital. Hours later her husband was pronounced dead apparently due to a bullet one in the head. He was killed by a lone gunman who apparently waited for his target after disembarking from the victim’s motorcycle. Under cover of darkness, the suspect just walked casually in the direction of Everglory Hotel located at the corner of Gallares-Maria Clara Sts. The victim was employed as a city porter since 1997 until he became chair of the porters coop two years ago. The remains of the fallen labor leader will be interred today at the Dampas Catholic Cemetery.
