Binay graces Carmen 143 foundation rites

By SEN GUINGGUING

The municipality of Carmen delivered a strong message that it was serious about asserting its place in Bohol politics when no less than the second highest official graced the launching of its 143 rd foundation day rites. Vice Pres. Jejomar Binay, the man tipped to become the country’s next president, was the honorary guest during the mass wedding ceremony last Feb. 29 at the Carmen gymnasium. Mayor Carmen Toribio de los Reyes led the town residents and officialdom in welcoming Binay. Binay, who has consistently topped recent poll approval ratings, became the virtual godfather of the 39 couples who were officially wed during the rites. Speaking before the emotionally-charged crowd, the vice president pledged to look for funds so the covered court will be completed. At the same time, Binay acknowledged the need to expand the coverage of services of the Cong.Simeon Toribio District Hospital so it can attend to the medical needs of more patients who come not only from Carmen but its neighboring towns.

An undefeated mayor of Makati before he vied for the second highest post in the land, Binay also committed P500,000 for the construction of the Senior Citizens Center in the town. Binay also turned over eight wheel chairs during the occasion. One of the priority programs in Makati are the benefits for senior citizens which Binay intends to replicate nationwide now that he is holding a national position. At the same time, the vice president extended his invitation to Toribio-de los Reyes to schedule a Lakbay Aral for the barangay captains of the town. In behalf of his son, incumbent Makati Mayor Jejomar Binay Jr., the vice-president said the visiting barangay captains will be welcomed in the country’s premiere city. Binay’s visit was arranged by Tagbilaran Mayor Dan Lim, the vice-president’s acknowledged point man in Bohol. The vice-president’s party was joined by several prominent political figures including the vice-president’s daughter Ann Binay Alcantara. Also present were local public officials including Cortes Mayor Jasmine Balistoy, Catigbian Mayor Roberto Salinas, second district Board Member Gerardo Garcia, Aris Aumentado, chief of staff of second district Rep. Erico Aumentado.
