Rep. Relampagos seeks to rename EDSA after Cory

Rep. Rene Relampagos of the first district of Bohol is seeking to change the name of Epifanio de los Santos Avenue or EDSA after Cory Aquino, an icon of democracy. Rep. Relampagos filed House Bill 5422 renaming EDSA to Cory Aquino Avenue in honor of former President Corazon Aquino, first woman president of the Republic, an icon of democracy, and a leading figure of the 1986 EDSA People Power Revolution. "Because of the 1986 EDSA Revolution, EDSA has become synonymous to democracy. And one cannot think of the 1986 EDSA Revolution without thinking of Corazon Aquino, a simple housewife who toppled a dictator — the proverbial David who fought against Goliath," said Rep. Relampagos. After the assassination of staunch Marcos critic Senator Benigno Aquino on August 21, 1983, his widow Corazon Aquino emerged as the face of the opposition.

After the release of dubious election results in the 1986 Snap Elections Cory Aquino along with around two million people rallied peacefully calling for the ouster of the dictator. The events of February 1986 culminated in the installation of Corazon Aquino as President of the Republic, ending over twenty years of being under tyrannical rule. As President Aquino oversaw the promulgation of a new constitution which limited the powers of the presidency and established a bicameral legislature. Her administration gave strong emphasis to civil liberties and human rights. Cory Aquino's economic policies centered on bringing back economic stability and confidence and focused on creating a market oriented and socially-responsible economy. "Even after her term as President of the Republic, she lived her life fighting for democracy, as she goes out of her way to fight for justice and truth, for peace and democracy. It would be but a fitting tribute to former President Corazon Aquino, a woman of courage and valor, that EDSA – an avenue that became testament to the country's love of democracy, be named after her," said Rep. Relampagos.
