Mother-Earth

Good Morning farmers and friends, yes, we will continue with our topic, mother –earth. We are ungrateful people worldwide, look at what God has created for us, and we seem to be intent in destroying everything, is this fair. We cannot live our lives in peace and harmony without him and this is a fact we must all accept.

Believing

Believing in the Lord is not a dream Nor a figment of the imagination Believing in the Lord, my friends Is something which we all must do After all, he alone invented creation Believing in the Lord means body and soul A nd a peaceful life you will maintain He is the director behind the scenes He will guide you over the rocky paths And in his care you will always remain How many times have you said I can't go on How many times have you said it's just not fair T hese are the times you forgot about God Y ou are being selfish and self-centered But if you are G od-centered, he's the one to care G ive your life to J esus today No half-measures, he wants it all All the things he has promised He will never let you down And remember, he will catch you when you fall F riends, the Lord is worthy of your praise Time is not wasted when you pray We are his children whom he loves Our duty is to honor our father in heaven Come, friend, it's our duty, let's do it without delay. Lets pray

Our topic – In continuing our topic mother-earth I am leaving. A lot of subjects out so that I can concentrate on doing a comparison between human-mother and mother-earth, I hope the older generation can bear with me on this as I feel the younger ones will understand it better this way. When we as humans feel sick we run to the doctor or call for his help, and hopefully we recover, but how does one know when mother-earth is sick? As a farmers and growers we can usually tell when things are not as they should be. The crops we grow can tell us what to look for in most cases. The biggest problem I've come up against here in Bohol is potash deficiency. Many areas where fruit crops are grown such as mango coconuts, bananas suffer because of this deficiency. Inspection of the plant and leaf structure can determine the problem of course, if you know what to look for. Like a medical doctor expert examination is crucial.

But remember, a plant cannot talk, it can only show you! As potassium is very mobile in plants. Deficiency symptoms appear first on the older leaves initially as chlorotic spots near the leaf tip and margin, developing into a necrosis between the leaf veins. Potash deficiency occurs in the majority of areas and is more common than the other two major nutrients, which are nitrogen and phosphate. Most forest soils are low in potash content, which maybe accentuated by growing crops such yams, potatoes and vegetables. Crops absorb a large amount of potassium during the early stages of growth and on rich soil can be more than the plant requires, on the other hand, poor or light soils do not retain a large reserve, and this is seen in the yields obtained. I should point out here that this is also caused by poor management.

A good crop to grow to maintain potash levels is pigeon pea or chick pea. These can be planted after whatever main crop is harvested. With climate change, it's not a threat anymore, friends, it's here. Now, we must look after mother earth if we are to survive. Growing crops to feed the people has never been so important as it is now. Over the years we have slowly been destroying our mother-earth. Over the years we have taken everything out of what mother-earth could give us, the problem has been that we had become greedy. If we are to continuing producing crops then we must replace everything we've taken from mother-earth, and we must start now.

Friends, I want to change direction for a while. We have all seen or heard of the world's problems. You might say “so what”, let's look at Africa first, there are over 900 children dying daily why? Because there is no food, the land is so poor it cannot been grow grass. This is a real case of lack of agricultural knowledge and modern technology and support from their government. On the other side, look at Brazil the beautiful rain forests are slowly being destroy by man, after the timber, what then, the poor farmers move in, slashing and burning and ravage mother-earth once more. You might say “this is on the other side of the world,” stop right there friends, if you care to look closely you will see that its begin to happen in your own back yard Deforestation logging, poor soil management, this is just a start of the problems to come the read to recovery will be long and hard, and it's something we cannot sweep under the carpet, so come on people, wake-up. Next week I will start on making our mother-earth more productive again. For our future needs. Husband look after your family, farmers and growers look after your mother-earth with love and care, if not we are all going to suffer, this is not a threat but a fact of life.

Take care, see you next week, the Farrago.
