Panglao fisherfolks hold rally supporting island reclamation

Some 300 fishermen and residents of the coastal barangays Danao, Doljo and Poblacion took to the streets of Panglao to hold a dramatic march early Monday morning in support of the multi-billion reclamation project. At the same time, the reclamation supporters used the white sands of Alona beach to deliver their appeal to the oppositors of the world-class eco-land reclamation project in Panglao Bay that Oasis Islands Leisure Development Inc. (Olidi) proposed. The rally was the launching of KALAMDAG, which stands for KaLihukan Alang sa Maayong Dagan sa kinaiyahan, kalamboan ug kabuhian sa lungsod sa Panglao – a group organized by residents and fisherfolks of Panglao and their families, who have banded together to support the reclamation project proposed by Olidi and the alternative means of livelihood and biodiversity enhancement that the mega-proposal presents . With placards and streamers in one hand, and their children held on the other, the people called for the leading oppositors lining Alona Beach — Citadel Alona Inn, Alona Tropical, Bohol Diver's Resort, Alona Crystal Coast and Aquatica Beach Resort – to not only read the messages written with bold letters on the signs they carry, but also see in their eyes the hope and opportunities the Oasis project bring to the coastal people of Panglao.

Disembarking from their fishing boats, the fishermen joined other residents and started the long march along Alona strip towards the Panglao town plaza bearing their appeal to authorities and oppositors to stop stone-walling the environmental study that would determine the extent of impact of the Oasis project on biodiversity. The study is imperative for the project to move forward and has been used as a major delaying point by the opposition. The residents and fisherfolks themselves who earn their living in the area are appalled and confused, having oppositors who claim to champion the environment and at the same time preventing the environmental study to proceed. The much talked about eco-land reclamation project involves the creation of four artificial islets, one of which will be devoted for nature park that will host an eco-park, bird and fish sanctuary, golf course, camping grounds, marina, pocket forest, hiking trails and zoo. This undertaking represents a flood of investment and thousands of job and livelihood opportunities to the residents and a means of a better way of coastal management and environmental maintenance that the island has yet to see.
