Dagit sa mga Bitoon'11 flowing with spectators

The parish church of St. Michael the Archangel of Jagna overflowed with children and adults alike waiting to see Jagna's annual event during the feast of the Epiphany, ang Dagit sa mga Bitoon, on January 3. The rain and strong winds did not deter the old and new spectators from gathering at the church to witness this centuries-old tradition. Dagit sa mga Bitoon during Epiphany followed the PaDagan sa Kometa during Misa Aguinaldo. The PaDagan sa Kometa highlighted the midnight mass celebration when during the singing of the Gloria, the big star or Kometa glided from above the choir loft at the church entrance toward the belen positioned at the altar. The Kometa arriving at the altar paid its respects to the newborn child Jesus by going down thrice then spreading its tail. It stayed guard over the belen until Epiphany when it would make its return known popularly as Dagit sa mga Bitoon.

The term dagit sa mga bitoon was coined after the flow of events following the Kometa. When the kometa returned to the church choir loft, it brought with it the 12 stars adorning the church ceiling during the Christmas season. The snatching of the twelve stars provided the entertainment to the spectators. The feeling of elation while watching the show even to the adult made one come back to witness year after year this unique event perfected thru the years. Candies falling from above when each star was snatched were a much awaited moment for children. This year's Dagit sa mga Bitoon was one successful event. The appreciation of the spectators after the show was a manifestation that the administrators of the event had done another laudable cultural accomplishment. By Amiela Singco-Balaba & Catalino Berro
