Loon Kasilak Church, now a national historical landmark

The grandeur and magnificence of Loon's imposing Nuestra Señora de la Luz (Our Lady of Light) Church was finally given appropriate recognition when it was declared as a National Historical Landmark by the National Historical Commission of the Philippines, (formerly National Historical Institute). No less than NHCP acting Executive Director Emelita V. Almosara and Most Rev. Leonardo Y. Medroso, Bishop of the Diocese of Tagbilaran, atttended the unveiling and presentation ceremonies held at the church's grounds in the evening of December 6, 2010. Providing an added backdrop to this distinctive honor, the National Museum of the Philippines also declared the Loon Church Complex which includes the Inang-angan (Stone Stairway of 212 Steps), Our Lady of Light Church, Mortuary Kiosk (Morada) and Cementerio de Mamposteria (Spanish Circular Cemetery) as National Cultural Treasures.

Loon Mayor Lloyd Peter M. Lopez, MD, who is also the chairman of the Municipal Council for Culture, Heritage and the Arts; Vice Mayor Edwin R. Ladeza, and Our Lady of Light Parish Priest Fr. Jose Stelieto A. Ruyeras, led local officials in welcoming Bishop Medroso and Executive Director Almosara and other church and government dignitaries who attended the momentous occasion. They included Angel Bautista, Head of the Properties Division of the National Museum; Fr. Efren Bongay, Chairman, Diocesan Commission on the Cultural Patrimony of the Church; Billy Tongco, Chief of Staff of the Office of the Governor; and Board Member Venzencio Arcamo.

Bishop Medroso presided over an Eucharistic Celebration at the Kasilak Church at 4:00 in the afternoon prior to the unveiling rites. Assisting him were the parish priests of neighboring towns who took part in the ceremonies. The mass was attended by provincial and municipal officials; Dep-Ed Loon South District officials, teachers and pupils; Sacred Heart Academy and UB-Loon Institute mentors and students, and the town's religious community. Medroso and Director Almosara did the honors in the unveiling of the Historical Marker which was embedded into the façade of the church. They were assisted by Tongco, who represented Gov. Edgar M. Chatto; BM Arcamo, Mayor Lopez, Vice Mayor Ladeza, Sangguniang Bayan members, Fr. Ruyeras and other church dignitaries. The NHCP Acting Executive Director then presented the Marker after which the Certificate of Transfer was signed by Alcosara and Medroso, duly witnessed by Tongco, Lopez and Ruyeras.

In his acceptance message, Medroso expressed his elation and joined the Loonanons in their boundless joy and gratitude for the enshrinement of the Kasilak Church as a historical landmark. He also extolled their dedication to the preservation and maintenance of cultural and heritage structures that are part and parcel of the town's history. The Bishop's message was aptly responded by Fr. Ruyeras. Vice Mayor Ladeza then presented a framed SB Resolution to Executive Director Almosara, expressing the municipality's appreciation to the NHCP. Afterwards, students of the Gov. Jacinto Borja National High School (Cantaongon), the grand prize winner of the 2010 SidlaKasilak Dance of Lights Competition, performed a Dance of Lights in honor of the Birhen sa Kasilak. Along with the Loon South Central Elementary School Children's Choir, they also performed a dance interpretation of the “Birhen sa Kasilak Hymn” composed by Loonanon Lou Corciega. A spectacular fireworks capped the night's activity. Municipal Tourism Action Officer, Reigh P. Monreal was the master of ceremony. The Loon Church was built by the Recollects in 1853 and designed by Domingo Escondrillas, a government engineer. It is considered as the crowning glory of Recollect churches in the province of Bohol.
