The Farrago - Eric J. Lyne

Mother Earth Global Warming

GOOD Morning to everyone again. Many people say to me, how can you be so happy, you spend all your time alone, I tell them. I am never alone I have the assurance, peace and the awareness of the Lords presence. These are benefits given without measure to every believer to enjoy. The Lord is my life without him I am nothing.

The word of God (1-4)

The old testament is full of it It shows man sinful streak Their willingness to follow Satan and sin O why must we all be so weak? But within its pages there were a few Who would stand up for what was right But the majority were so self centered Why do was need the Lord they cried O how these fools were in for a fright The Lord wanted to show his flock All the things that he could do Look what he did for Moses And one course Abraham and David But these are just a few But Satan was always there Stirring up trouble and strife Like a wolf amongst a flock of sheep They were frightened running scared Come to me Satan called my way is the life The Lord could only watch in despair And his flock ran into the dark O my people why are thou so full of sin You dropped your defense and Satan was there The Lord said my idea to save, I will build and ark. He said to Noah you are a good man You are so faithful to me you will leave your Mark You love me and I love you like a son Our people are getting out of hand I want you to work for me and build me an ark Noah built the Ark, as the Lord said Then he caused rain to flood the land It was the Lord intention to wipe out sin Noah and his family and the animals were saved Help us Lord they cried and he gave them is hand Satan was getting anger than ever When he came across job, the Lord friend and chum Yes, he said, this is the one I will use To turn the tables on the Lord Now watch things change, we will have some fun Jobs first loss came when he lost his stock Satan smiles, my way has just begun The poor job lost his crop And his camels and his homes But worst of all me lost his son Satan called and said come to me job, I care But job said he ran from me you are a pain I would lay my life down to the Lord He will protect me I know So I will worship the Lord for as long as he reigns

Our topic – The last couple of weeks I've written about climate change and what it means to the farming community, but there is another factor which is just as important and that is global warming. This can also be disastrous to agriculture too. For me I am worried about global warming, and the effect it will have on our farmers. Global warming is an environmental threat unlike anything the world has faced before. If we look back, human activities during the past century have damaged a long list of natural systems, most of these problems are local or regional in scope and can be reversed in years or decades if sufficient effort is exerted. But this doe's not apply to global warming. Climate change is the biggest environmental issue because it threatens to be disastrous to us all.

It will not only directly affect our climate, but will severely affect us human beings and the ecosystem, millions of people will be suffering because of it. In the poverty-stricken areas of the world like Asia, global warming means less food. The Laguna based International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) said rising temperatures can reduce rice yields. A study by IRRI shows that rice plants could benefit from higher levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, but an increase in temperature by up to 4c° however would nullify any yield increase. Remember, global warming is more disastrous to the agricultural industry of the Philippines and its neighboring Asian countries than in other parts of the world. Dr. David Street of the US Agrogonne National Laboratory says this is because most countries in Asia and the Pacific have very large populations that are heavily dependant upon their Marine Ecosystems and Natural Resources.

Lets look at a case in West Java in Indonesia, my research showed that 7,227 hectares of aquaculture ponds and more than 11,000 hectares of rice fields are expected to be wiped out due to climatic change. This means a loss of more than 4,000 tons of fish and 70,000 tons of rice a years. Higher temperatures also affect species migration and spawning patterns. As the temperature warms. Many plants, fish insects and bacteria move into new areas eradicating indigenous species. The number and ranges of agricultural pests will likely increase, while growing ranges for many crops will shift, this is a warming set out by the Washington – DC based World Watch Institute. This Intergovernmental panel on climate change (IPCC) a group of 2,500 scientist said the rising sea levels is one of the most certain results of global warming, a continuing rise in average global sea levels would inundate parts of many heavily populated river deltas and the cities on them making them uninhabitable, and would destroy many beaches around the world.

This would mean the Philippines would be in big trouble. The coastline stretches 18,000 kilometers it is vulnerable to sea level rise. Since 1965, the Philippine atmospheric, geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) reported an increasing trend in the sea level rise. This trend has been continuing to this day and still is at the time of writing. Some skeptics believe that global warming is rubbish and pure hogwash, they are in for a big surprise, signs are now more translucent. In the Philippines for example, typhoons and persisting weather disturbances are now a common reality. Some experts blamed the erratic climatic conditions for the series of landslides and floods that brought death and destruction in central and Southern Philippines. For me, I believe that the weather-related disasters we are having area due to global climate change, very frightening .

Take care, see you next week.
