A sense of inspiration and enthusiasm was felt at the forum on New Educational Concepts and Mechanisms on Physics, Mathematics and English Teaching Modules presented by 2010 Ramon Magsaysay awardees and physicists Dr. Christopher C. Bernido, Dr. Ma. Victoria Carpio-Bernido. Gov. Edgar M. Chatto, happily expressed how proud he was of the honor the province was given with the recognition the Bernido couple received as awardees of what is widely known as Asia's equivalent to the Nobel Prize. Gov. Chatto who firmly believes education as an important component of the province's development framework reiterated Bohol's vision of a well-educated and well-trained citizenry. Growth depends on the kind of education we provide, he said.
He also cited earlier morning's discussion on radio about the mechanisms for students to get a college degree or develop skills in different forms to equip them for their future lives. This he discussed with representatives from the education sector during the program, Kita ug ang Gobernador , a weekly governor's report he initiated in an effort to make the provincial government's presence felt at community level. He had hoped for the forum to inspire participants towards the application of the revolutionary teaching module in schools to improve the delivery of quality education.
The Bernidos delivered a talk on Learning Physics as One Nation (LPHON), an offshoot of the Dynamic Learning Program they started at the Central Visayan Institute Foundation (CVIF) in Jagna. The module features a portfolio of 239 pages of curriculum-based learning activities and an 18 volume DVD of lectures and discussions from selected PhDs. It emphasizes collaborative teaching and collaborative learning with the primary duty of the teacher to enable students to learn. With the teacher as guide and with the use of appropriate strategy and technology, this project not only answers the problem of lack of qualified teachers but also addresses what the Bernidos refer to as a crisis in the state of education in our country. Dr. Christopher Bernido said if there was one thing to retain in the forum, it was that “it is not enough that we are industrious, we should be working hard and working very hard in the right direction.”
The physicists and scientists were awarded the Governor's citation for their outstanding work in seeking to upgrade the state of education, particularly for Science in the country. First and Third District Congressmen Rene Relampagos and Arthur Yap who were present at the forum assured complete support for the project to make Bohol as champion province, a leading center for excellence. Gov. Chatto on the request for free modules/portfolio reproduction declared that this was clear enough indication that the sharing inspired all educators present at the forum. Despite apprehensions about traditional teaching style conflicting with revolutionary LPHON, Schools Division Superintendent Lorna Rances explained there will be no conflict as LPHON follows the basic education curriculum. Thus, integrating all subjects.
Before the forum ended, Gov. Chatto declared the creation of a Technical Working Group (TWG) composed of Schools Division Superintendent Lorna Rances, BACS 1 Supervisor Winnie Flores, Asst. School Division Superintendent Wilfreda Bongalos, Consultant for Education Cerina Bolos, representatives from districts to be named by the congressmen, and the Bernido couple. The TWG shall oversee the planning of the June 2011 province-wide implementation of LPHON. As conclusion, a resounding yes emanated from principals and administrators from public and private secondary schools in the province when asked by Cong. Rene Relampagos if they wanted the project to push through.
