“Don't look at me”, Chatto to critics of governor's fate

“Don't look at me”, seemed to be the mock reaction of Cong. Edgar Chatto as accusing fingers pointed to him as the mastermind in what befell Gov. Erico Aumentado's fate, in his earnest desire to return to his old Congress post under the ruling Lakas-Kampi CMD. The governor, a loyal Lakas man since the party became the party of choice among administration allies, was stripped of his Certificate of Nomination and Acceptance (CONA) after he was suspected to be sleeping with the enemy particularly the camp of Sen. Manuel Villar, the Nacionalista Party. There was even an insinuation that V-Gov. Julius Ceasar Herrera and former Provincial Administrator Tomas Abapo, Jr. who bolted to the NP recently were the governor's “advance party”. The governor was profuse in his denial that he was consorting with the enemy saying that he cannot afford to turn his back to the Arroyo administration knowing its unprecedented delivery of projects to Bohol which amounted in the billions of pesos. Cool as ever when under pressure, Cong. Chatto feigned ignorance about the revocation of Aumentado's CONA saying that up to the last minute he was still batting for the governor as second district congressional bet. Until, Chatto added, the national party top leaders of Lakas lowered the boom on the governor's true party affiliation.

In an interview with Station DYRD, Francis Manglapus, secretary-general of the ruling Lakas Kampi-CMD said Aumentado's fate hanged in the balance when he committed an “act inimical to the party interest”. Of which Aumentado balked-- what party interest were they talking about? Interpreting it as a case of party loyalty, the loyal party man asked was there any party discussion when Catigbian Mayor Roberto Salinas was booted out as Lakas party bet for congressman in the first district? Mayor Salinas was kicked out without any ceremony from his congressional ambition when he was replaced as coalition bet in favor of former governor Rene Relampagos. It turned out that in Bohol , Lakas is a coalition partner of the Laban ng Demokratikong Pilipino, Relampagos' party. Trying to stay away from the trouble Aumentado was in, Chatto said he got it from a reliable authority like the Lakas national directorate that what happened to Aumentado was his own undoing after he was suspected to be flirting with the camp of Villar. Commenting further on the current imbroglio, the first district solon said amidst the recent turn of events in the Lakas-Kampi CMD, “I assure everyone that the party remains steadfast in its resolve to pursue its objectives including victory of all candidates. We are looking forward to the continued support of our people for the best interest of Bohol and the Boholanos”.
