MCDC-Talibon joins 1st Asian coop gab

The local government unit of Talibon now intends to strengthen cooperatives in the municipality with new tips that delegates had brought home from 1st Asian Teamshop and Regional Symposium for Cooperatives held recently at the Cebu International Convention Center (CICC) in Mandaue City. Sangguniang Bayan Committee on Cooperatives Chair Virginia Item, Talibon Credit Cooperative Chair Panfilo Sumalinog, and Municipal Cooperative Development Council (MCDC) Mass Media Officer Eleuteria Pañares attended the summit and had brought home some inputs to help improve the operation of coops. During the summit, the Talibon team brushed elbows with delegations from Bangladesh , Pakistan , Malaysia , Japan and other institutions in the country. Representatives of the Cooperative Development Authority (CDA) headed by Lacera Juares and Coop Administrator Segfredo Buagas also attended the summit.

Mandaue City Mayor Jonas Cortes and Cebu Governor Gwendolyn Garcia gave the welcome address. Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile, in his message, said “the coops are the engine for economic sustainability and serve as the bridge between the people and the government”. As legislator he promised to sponsor a bill seeking for the betterment of the cooperatives as he strongly believes that the coops can help reduce poverty. Senator Pia Cayetano, the country's youngest senator, delved on women cooperative. She assured that she will draft a magna carta for women that would provide livelihood programs and loans to any financing institutions that are assisting coops.

Cayetano also said that with the country's democratic atmosphere, men and women are strong partners in nation-building, as she encouraged the participants to be active agents of coop advocacy as an effective tool to end violence against women. “It is our responsibility to support each other,” she said. LGU-Talibon had organized the MCDC even before the executive order of Governor Erico Aumentado. Of the 33 coops under the MCDC, 16 are women's coops that hold regular monthly meetings every 3rd Wednesday of the month to discuss issues and concerns arising from the day-to-day operation of every coop. It has become the regular task of Nesa Cagulada of CDA to attend the coops' meetings to give additional inputs on coop management and operation. In the last monthly meeting, Cagulada informed the members about the planned Asian summit at the CICC.
