Boholano community mourns Cory's death

The entire Boholano community joined the nation in mourning the death of EDSA icon former President Corazon Cojuangco Aquino. The Boholanos' general sentiment over the death of the first lady president of the country was personified by Bohol Gov. Erico Aumentado when he issued an order placing all flags at half-mast as a sign of mourning. Tagbilaran Bishop Leon-ardo Medroso extended the sincere condolence of the diocese to the family of the late President. “We are aware of the great contribution that she made in the political life of our people. In the midst of Martial Law, she stood up in spite of her weakness as a mere housewife to take up the challenge to bring democracy back to our people,” Medroso said.

Former Sen. Ernesto Herrera said “the country lost a great icon who restored freedom, democracy and human rights - which are aspirations of the labor sector.” A member of the Agrava fact-finding board who investigated the Ninoy Aquino assassination, Herrera was close to the former President who personally endorsed him for a Senate seat in 1987. “It is just unfortunate that we don't produce leaders like her anymore,” he added. Vice Gov. Julius Caesar Herrera said Cory's death is undoubtedly “a big loss”.

“She was sincere, firm, simple and yet unwavering in her commitment to a better life for the Filipino,” Herrera said. The vice-governor added that more than ever, there is a need to be vigilant against any move towards the con-ass because this was one of the last battles that Cory fought. Tagbilaran Mayor Dan Lim dedicated an editorial in his weekly “Mayor's Report” over Station DyTR to pay tribute to the late President who appointed him OIC mayor after the EDSA revolution. “She was so humble and simple that she had to be convinced that the privilege for her to go through a red light was for security measures befitting a head of state,” he said. Even militants who railed against President Aquino during her incumbency paid tribute to her, describing her death as “a loss to the country”. “She was a President installed by People Power. She had her weaknesses during her term but even after her term she continued to help unite the Filipinos in working for reforms and transparency in government,” said John Ruiz III, Bayan-Bohol secretary-general.
