Peacock Garden opens

THREE years ago, the site atop a hill was only infernal dust. Today, it snuggles a two-storey grandiose structure that offers accommodations, fine dining and the experience that is truly European. Peacock Garden Luxury Resort and Spa takes pride in mixing the European, that is, the west - with the best that Bohol , particularly Laya, Baclayon, the Philippines and the east in general can proffer: warmth, hospitality and that easy and contagious smile. No less than Secretary Joseph "Ace" Durano flew over to lead the inaugural rites of the latest addition to Bohol 's burgeoning tourism industry.

In his message, Durano thanked spouses Hans Schoof, a German national, and Lani, his Boholana wife, for responding to the call of the time. "The primary vision for all our efforts for tourism is to provide jobs," he said. With this investment, he continued, hundreds of Boholanos will be employed. At the same time, he reminded the employees to always display those warm smiles and perform sincere services otherwise, the place will just be an empty structure.

He congratulated the couple for their confidence in embarking into the venture, saying it is also a mark of their full confidence in the local leadership. Durano said all is well in Bohol 's tourism industry. Among the "secret" ingredients for this success are the vision and the inspiration that comes with the hard work of people like Gov. Erico Aumentado and Rep. Edgar Chatto of Bohol 's 1st District. "It also helps that the private and the business sectors here share this vision and work very closely with the province. That is Bohol 's secret of success," he said.

This formula will be tested anew with the arrival here in October of more than 400 delegates from over 100 countries. They chose Bohol for their sub-technical visit on Durano's say-so. Noting the still big unbuilt area of the Schoof property, he said the Department of Tourism will continue to promote Bohol "so that you will expand!" For his part, Aumentado was awestruck by the panoramic view - "most elegant, beautiful, fantastic view of the ocean". He said he was not surprised that the philanthropist and his wife decided to build the monument of their love in Laya.

"As we recall the life, loves and ideals of our foremost national hero, Dr. Jose Rizal, let us also put into the view the historicity of the host town. It is home to the country's oldest church," he said. "Today, the provincial government of Bohol salutes and congratulates Hans and Lani on the opening of the Peacock Garden Luxury Resort and Spa - Hans is my consultant on tourism and trade and industry - for this undertaking that will strengthen the foundation of the tourism industry in Bohol . I am sure that the tourism industry will move forward," he added.

He said someday it will be recorded in the history of the country that one vital engine for realizing the dream of Ace of 500 million tourists visiting the country in the next two years is not far-fetched. Peacock Garden 's opening also eases a bit the 2,500-room backlog. Taking in the view, the food, the entertainment and everything, Hans' fellow expatriate Irena Heberer said it all: "Absolutely great!" The opening started with a mass with Bishop Leonardo Medroso as main celebrant, followed by the ribbon cutting and cocktails, a short program. and dinner. Entertainment courtesy of Manila-based and local stars at the terrace followed, capped with a fireworks display.
