Theft of airport runway lights leads to closure of junk shops

When they came to steal the runway lights and transformers of the Tagbilaran City Airport , little did the suspects know that it would trigger a domino effect like the closure of all junk shops in this city. Junk shop operators bore the brunt of City Mayor Dan Lim's ire towards the theft of the airport lighting facilities. The city mayor did not renew their business permits. In a bid to remain in business, the junk shop owners are training their sights at nearby Dauis town as possible relocation site. A group of juvenile delinquents owned up the crime of stealing the airport lights prompting Mayor Lim to order the closure of a total of 17 junk shops.

The airport incident was apparently “the last straw that broke the camel's back” after several complaints were received by the office of the mayor that city junk shops are “fences” for stolen junks. The minors responsible for the airport theft admitted that the runway lights and transformers which contained copper wires were sold to one of the junk shops in this city. The erring junk shop operator was not identified. Another reason for the mayor's order to close the junk shops was the tendency of the operators to appropriate part of the road as stockpile areas of the junks they bought from customers.
